Being happy clenses the soul

Saturday: I'm so proud of myself. I managed to force myself to stay in bed till 12pm, record eh! So there I was, waking up to a very short day. I decided to watch the Pursuit of Happyness that AJ helped me burn. It’s one of those shows which have you revisiting life, because it offers you another side to it, and how most of us are already so damn bloody well to do but we just can’t seem to be satisfied. The bane of materialism...

Anyway, in the evening AJ invited Eehwee and me over to Russell’s place for a BBQ. On previous occasions, there were our class guys present to buffer the lack of socialising with the ‘other side’, but this time, it was just us girls plus AJ. So we mostly kept to ourselves, not that we really minded I think. Because it would beat having to come all friendly in order to talk to them like old friends... mm. We chose to play the Wii upstairs in Russ’s room while the rest were downstairs getting the cooking going. Since there were only sports games, we were forced to dabble in the likes of Bowling, Tennis, Golf and Baseball. It was my first time on it and I found it super fun! Amazing how technology has brought gaming to a whole new level man!

Once the fire got started, we went down. Haha, we’re SUCH practical people. The lure of good food beckons, who can resist the temptations! The food was such a spread, as it always is. It kinda felt a bit like pot luck, because there was Derron with his soursop, Eehwee with her vodka, Yanting with her fish marinated in herbs, and AJ’s beer pork. You get the idea, it was GOOD BBQ food. And thank you AJ for marinating most of the food, ‘Xin ku ni le!’ It was also the first time I tried sausage with cheese, simply delicious! The cheese flows out when you bite into the succulent meat, it’s those kinda foods you can just keep eating and eating and eating, and not get sick of. Oh yes, they also bought all this fish flakes which you get on the tacoppachi balls and the chicken teriyaki sauce to go with the BBQ food, lovely. And Yanting also had this plum sauce... waaah. In one night, I’ve learned to appreciate good BBQ food. My standard in future is gonna be so high.

Speaking of which, Yanting is sooooooooooo motherly. She fusses over us like we’re her children, making her rounds and ensuring we all have enough to eat, and that the food is good, and that we have drinks. Gee, I feel tired for her. And she’s very adorable because she ‘zi high’ very easily, and she’ll laugh this throaty laughter that makes you wanna laugh along even though you have no clue what the joke was. Yes, her enthusiasm is that infectious. Eehwee and myself found ourselves laughing along on more than one occasion. And the other girl there was Shuhuan, my OG mate during orientation in ‘07. Small world, indeed, small small world.

Oh and guess what, Russ’s domestic helper actually recognises me. She was commenting that my hair was much longer the other time round. Ooh! I'm pleasantly surprised she remembers. After dinner, we played games. Thanks to Derron for coming up with these social games that had us all bursting into constant fits of laughter.

The first game was where we all had to take turns listen on the earpiece the tune that was being played and hum it out for everyone to guess. It was friggin’ hilarious because some of the guys looked so comical, not to mention that their humming in itself could have us all doubling over in laughter. After that, we switched over to Eehwee’s iPod with all the Chinese songs. Now this was very amusing as well because Chinese is not something all of us use very often. After that, we hopped on to the next game where we had to say Chinese phrases or sayings and link the next phrase to the last word of the previous phrase. For those whose Chinese wasn’t spectacular, it provided fodder for good fun and laughter.

And in a more forlorn tone, it’s been a long time since my own bunch of friends did this. They say they’re all busy, sometimes I feel they can’t be bothered. Because it cannot be that every single time they aren’t able to make it. Raymond and I were just lamenting that day about how sad it would be if everyone couldn’t be bothered. Hell yeah it’d be sad. But if they can’t be bothered, why would they even care? It’s a vicious cycle really. I'm just getting along, finding time to meet up with those who still bother.

And looking at all the couples today, I'm brought back to reality. I mean, I'm in no hurry whatsoever to get attached but the last time I relished something this sweet was more than two years ago. Sometimes, I get to wondering if...

O Seriously, get real.
