I swam with my Dad in the morning. I was on my feet a large part of the afternoon. I went to run 5km after dinner. My whole body is chui already -.-
Anyway, this afternoon, my Dad got invited to some event at the Singapore Discovery Centre. Note, it's not to be confused with the Singapore Science Centre because one's near Bouna Vista and the others' situated in Joo Koon. This was my first visit there, ever, and I really discovered stuff.
We gathered at their iWerks theatre for the standard introductory talk, and I grew so bored so I started doodling on the 'My Dream for Singapore' card, which is just one small facet of a whole string of events leading up to NDP' 09. We were split up into groups and my group stayed in the theatre to watch a 3D screening of Dolphins and Whales. It basically tells you about the characteristics of the various species of these marvellous marine animals and the point they're really driving across is that of animal conservation, and how humans should just learn to stop being plain selfish and start trying to change their lifestyle for the better.
You know how 3D movies are like: Imagine being submerged deep in the blue ocean and right in front, you're staring straight into a pair of beady, intense eyes of the humpback whale. Those eyes will mesmerise; it'll tell you a story without words, it'll jolt your emotions without touch, it'll be like nothing you've ever seen. And you have the spotted/common/bottlenose dolphins all frolicking right before your very eyes. Not to mention that the narration by Daryl Hannah is so goddamn hypnotising. It's such an amazing experince.
Refreshments followed - Oooo the eclaires and cheesecakes were mouth-watering! There were booths that allowed you to take home poodles and swords - all of which will shrink in a couple of days as the air escapes from the balloon, as well as booths that allowed you to colour pictures of little animals that could be made into badges. While I was colouring a pig, and my Dad was working hard on his dog, someone remarked, "That's a beautiful picture!" Naturally, I turned and half-hoped it was yet three-quarters knew it wasn't referring to me. Still, I turned and obviously, my Dad was directing his remark at this little kid at our table.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not some seriously deprived kid who's never been praised. I'm just thinking, it's true that kids need praises to develop that precious self-confidence. But how it is that people assume the older you get, the less of such invaluable encouragement you need? That's not true, in fact, life gets tougher. I'm not referring to drawings obviously, I just mean in general. Ahh, just a passing thought.
After that, my Mum and I went to sit this 4D ride. WOOOH! Fantastic stuff! There were just 2 of us and my Dad's friend. My Dad couldn't go on because he has high blood pressure. Anyway, it was just adrenaline pumping! Maybe even my bones were taking in the awesomeness of the ride. Haha... ^^
We visited the army museum after lingering about the main whole waiting for instructions. It's really cool, the whole establishment of the army process. And the place is really high tech because they have all these uber realistic screenings that really allow you to get as close as possible to the real thing. There was this short clip on how a battlefield would be like, if war actually came knocking on our shores. And it was a whole experince because the surround sound was good, there were real model tanks which fired blanks when the clip had a scene which required it. You almost felt afraid.
Finally, it was this whole gallery on What Makes Us Singaporean. It's a good exhibit, albeit a poorer cousin of the science centre in terms of the interaction you can get out of the gadgets available, but then again, it's two wholly different genres we're talking about. Still, it made me tick, it made me proud to be Singaporean. Kudos to my lovable guide Lizda for making the whole tour so much more enjoyable. She was the only high person admist the other 15 bored faces staring back at her.
It was quite a fun-filled time at the Singapore Discovery Centre, but it's not some place where you'll probably find yourself going very often though. Good thing every thing was free today, otherwise, it'd have cost a fair bit.
I'm watching Harper's Island now, god it gives me the creeps.
